Abstract

284,818. Szarvasy, I. Dec. 6. 1926. Furnace details. - Gaseous hydrocarbons, especially methane or natural gas are subjected to cracking to form a mixture finely divided carbon and tarry matters and, in addition, solid coherent carbon nearly as refractory as retort graphite. The mixture is coked and ground and then worked up in known maner to form electrodes or other carbon bodies. The solid coherent carbon is also ground and worked up to form electrodes either alone or mixed with the ground coked mixture. Coking is carried out at a temperature not exceeding 1700‹ C. It may be effected in an atmosphere containing hydrocarbons at a temperature above their decomposition temperature.
