Abstract

539,638. Cementation; materials for making coke and other products. ADLER, R. June 13, 1940, No. 10302. [Class 55 (ii)] [Also in Group II] Carbonizing material for use in the hardening of iron and steel is obtained by heating gradually the higher boiling products of crude oil, or asphalt or tar from coal, shale, peat, or wood, together with an alkaline earth carbonate or oxide or a mixture of these with or without an alkali metal carbonate up to a red heat in the absence of air until substantially all the volatiles have escaped. The heating may be in two stages, slowly to 470‹C. and a shorter treatment at 700‹ to 970‹C. The residue may be leached with water to leave a carbonate content of 4 to 6 per cent., and dried. Substances rich in carbon such as wood or bone charcoal, or coal may be added before distillation to increase the hardness and porosity of the product. Ferrocyanides, thiocyanates and phosphates may be added prior to the distillation to facilitate the reaction between the iron and the carbon. In examples coal tar and coal pitch are referred to as starting materials.
