Abstract
Coked agglomerates of metallic ores, for example zinc ore, are obtained by mixing the ore with coal having a bituminous content, and subjecting it to rapid heating (45 minutes) to at least 800 DEG C. so as to form a shell of coke on the surface, and continuing the heating so as to complete the coking operation. A temporary binder such as sulphite liquor, tar, or pitch, may be used. Coking may be effected by contact with a non-oxidizing gas such as producer gas heated from 800 DEG to 1000 DEG C., and the coked agglomerates may be transferred without loss of heat to the zinc distillation retort. Some of the gas leaving the coking chamber may be burned to heat the charge adjacent to the gas outlet-side of the chamber. Specifications 298,921 [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], and 344,570, are referred to.
