Abstract

Purified ores, metallurgical coke, and hydrocarbons of low boiling-point are obtained by heating together a mixture of crude iron ores, crude solid carbonaceous materials, and heavy liquid hydrocarbons to 500 DEG C. the proportions of the mixture being such that the total amount of solid material present is not less than half that of the liquid hydrocarbons. The iron ore may contain oxides of manganese, chromium, and silicon; the solid carbonaceous material may comprise wood, lignite or coal; the heavy liquid hydrocarbons may comprise petroleum residues. 150 kgs. petroleum residues, 50 kgs. pulverized iron ore and 100 kgs. wood treated in this manner yield 45 kgs. agglomerated and sulphur free ore, 48 kgs. coke and the 150 kgs. hydrocarbons of which 89 per cent distil below 200 DEG C.
