Coking processes.-Fuel briquettes are subjected to coking temperatures while embedded in granular or coarsely powdered material being fed into and preferably removed from the oven or retort while embedded. Metal shot, iron ore, coke breeze, coarse sand or pebbles, anthracite duff, or metallic granules as of aluminium, or mixtures thereof may be used as the embedding material. Steam or gas may be passed into the retort to equalize the temperature between the retort wall and the middle of the charge. Anthracite briquettes are heated to about 950' C, assuming the characteristics of metallurgical coke, and briquettes formed of or containing bituminous coal are carbonized at 500‹-600‹ C. or 900‹-1000‹ C. In the case of swelling coals, the briquettes may be preheated to about the decomposition point for a short time and. inorganic compounds such as ferric chloride may be included.
