219,659. Frey, W. P. July 25, 1923, [Convention date]. Coking processes.-Briquettes containing anthracite &c., bituminous coal, and a temporary binder are charged into the hottest zone of a rotary retort so that the material is first exposed to the maximum temperature and afterwards enters temperature zones of decreased intensity. The briquettes are fed by a shoot 12 into the retort, which is heated by a burner 13 to 2000- 3000‹ F., and are conveyed towards the cooler end, whence they are delivered past spraying- rozzles 15 and a valve 17 which prevents ingress of air into the drum. The heat treatment produces on the surface of the briquettes a hard layer which retains an appreciable amount of matter volatile at the high temperature. Specification 217,236 is referred to.
