Abstract
506,391. Furnace plant. QUENNELL, H., and LLOYD, F. Nov. 25, 1937, No. 32469. [Class 51 (i)] Non-coking coal is carbonized at a temperature of 400-500‹ C. in an externally-heated rotary retort of the kind described in Specification 454,268, and the coke, while still hot, is supplied to the grate of a combustion apparatus where it is burnt. The coking time is such that all volatiles capable of being removed at the working temperature are driven off. The gas produced, after extraction of condensible products, is used either in the combustion apparatus to which the coke is fed, or for heating the retort, but the latter may be heated by the waste gases of the combustion apparatus. The fuel may be crushed before it is fed to the retort, or the crushing may be effected after carbonization. Access of air to the hot coke between the retort and the combustion apparatus is prevented by use of an enclosed conveyer, and where the combustion apparatus is fed intermittently arrangements may be provided for storage of the hot coke out of contact with air.
