509,354. Retorts for low-temperature carbonization. RUSSELL, A. C., and GARVEN, C. W. March 21, 1938, No. 8693. Convention date, March 25, 1937. [Class 55 (i)] In the low-temperature carbonization of shale, coal, lignite, cellulose, &c., the material is distilled in the absence of air or oxygen in an externally-heated retort into which is also admitted heated reducing gas, whilst being exposed to natural quartz as a catalyst. An externallv ribbed retort 11 located in a furnace 6 heated by the combustion of gas from pipes 8 is supplied with material from a pipe 16, an endless conveyer 35 passing through the retort and discharging residue on to a crusher 28. One or more interstitial supports 30 carry natural quartz, for promoting the evolution of vapours. Heated reducing gas is admitted through pipes 34.
