Abstract
230,281. Imray, O. Y., (Curtis, S. P.). March 24, 1924. Retorts and methods of working.-Coal is carbonized in a retort having a central take-off duct so that a continuous plastic film is formed in the body of the heated material which separates the low from the high temperature products, the former escaping by the central duct through the coolest part of the material. The retort A, heated by a combustion chamber B, is provided with a perforated central duct C closed at the top and provided at the bottom with a vapour outlet L submerged in a tank G. The coal is fed through the top of the retort which is then closed by a cover F of fire bricks. A plastic film x forms about 825‹ C. and travels towards the interior of the charge, and the gas evolved at low temperatures is forced to pass into the duct C. On raising the temperature, further gases are evolved which pass off through an outlet E and a hard coke is left in the retort. Specification 174,676 is referred to.
