Carbonizing apparatus.- A portable carbonizing kiln is open at the top, and is provided with means for withdrawal of gases and vapours from below the combustion zone. Air is supplied to the charge, and the gases are withdrawn through refractory pipes b. Valves c<3> are fitted in the collecting pipes c<2> and closed successively as the distillation zone descends. Instead of using pipes b, vertical cavities may be provided in one of the side walls a<1> and covered on the inside with perforated plates, and horizontal cavities may also be provided; or separate pipes f may be used to admit air.
