304,859. Bowater, N. J., Lymn, A. H., and Chamber Ovens, Ltd. Nov. 7, 1927. Smoke and fumes, confining on generation.- Smoke and fumes are withdrawn from intermittent carbonizing-apparatus, such as vertical chamber ovens &c., above and in close vicinity to the fuel-charging aperture, and are discharged into a manifold m connected to exhausting-apparatus. Fuel-charging apparatus a is adapted to be moved so as to register with one of the chamber ovens b<1> - - b<4>, valve -controlled charging apertures c, c<1> being adapted to register with ports d<1>, d<2>. The apparatus a carries a smoke flue e having a hood f adapted to be lowered so as to withdraw smoke &c. from an aperture in the corresponding chamber. The upper end of the smoke flue e is adapted to register with one of a series of valve-controlled apertures v in the lower part of the manifold m. An exhauster g may be employed above the manifold m, or the upward draught in the coke-quenching tower may be utilized for withdrawing the smoke &c. Flanges may be provided on the smoke flue e and on the apertures of the manifold m.
