Abstract
408,738. Retorts for destructive distillation. WEST, F. J., WEST E., and WEST'S GAS IMPROVEMENT CO., Ltd., Miles Platting, Manchester. Dec. 8, 1932, No. 34809. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i).] A vertical retort for carbonizing coal, has an annular carbonization space a with its inner wall forming the outer wall of vertical combustion chambers b to which air and gas are supplied by passages t and w, the distilates being withdrawn through an outlet h. The coke is discharged by lowering an annular door n supported by rams x, and sliding doors 23 are provided to support the charge in the space awhile this takes place. The coke may be steamed by pipes 32 and 33. The smooth walls of the carbonization space diverge from top to bottom to facilitate discharge which takes place intermittently.
