Abstract

342,104. Retorts for low temperature carbonization. CARLTON MAIN COLLIERY CO., Ltd., ADDY, R., and GILL, S., Barnsley, and TOZER, C. W., 66, Victoria Street, London. Jan. 7, 1930, No. 649. [Class 55 (i).] A retort for the low temperature distillation of coal or the like comprises concentric vertical chambers forming alternately spaces into which the coal is charged, and heating spaces, an inner heating chamber being raised when the coal around it is discharged. The coal is enclosed in the space B<1> between outer chambers A and inner chambers B, the upper parts of which rest on a conical seating A<3>, doors C closing the lower ends of the chambers, and the inner chamber being raised by a travelling crane D<x> when the coke is discharged. The righthand side of Fig. 1 shows a single coal space B<1> heated externally by a flue A<2> and internally by flues B3, and the left-hand side shows a second annular coal space E<1> heated externally by the flues B<3> and internally by hot gases in a central chamber E. The distillates pass to annular compartments B<6>, E4 leading to an outlet conduit F<1>. The heating gases pass into and out of the interior of the chamber E through lateral openings E<7>, B<7> communicating with heating passages in the outer brickwork A<1>. The upper parts of the chambers A and E have shoulders A<x>, B<x> , Fig. 5, to prevent the coke in the spaces B<1>, E<1> from moving upwards when the chambers B, E are raised. The outlet pipe F<1> leads into a water seal G which closes the outlet main F when the chamber B is raised. Coal is fed into the spaces B<1>, El through openings b<4>, e2, Fig. 5, normally closed by sliding doors. In a modification, Fig. 9, the chamber B at the right-hand side is heated externally only, and the distillates may pass through apertures b<8> in the inner wall of the chamber B into the hollow space enclosed therein and into spaces b<6x>, b<7x> leading to the outlet pipe F<1>. The left side of Fig. 9 shows a double-walled chamber B providing an annular space b<9> into which the distillates flow through apertures b<8> in the outer wall. When a central chamber E is provided, this is raised and lowered first at the end of the carbonizing process to dislodge the coke from the space E<1>, the chamber B being then raised and lowered (carrying with it the chamber E) to dislodge the coke from the space Bl.
