Abstract

302,188. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Koppers C'o.). June 11, 1927. Charging.-A coke oven is charged from openings in the roof near both ends of the oven and subsequently through an intermediate opening, the smoke and gas generated being withdrawn into gas collecting mains from the spaces on the two sides of the intermediate mound of coal through outlets at both ends of the oven. A coke oven 11 is provided with charging openings 12, intermediate gas and smoke outlets 13, and end gas outlets 17 extending through the top 14 of the oven. The openings 12 and 13 are normally closed by lids. During the charging operation, hoppers 19 and off-take pipes 31, which are mounted in a frame 18 having wheels 18<1> for movement longitudinally of the setting, are moved into position so that the shoots 21 and conduits 31 register with the openings 12 and 13 respectively. Covers are then removed from the openings and sleeves 22 and 34 are lowered, while sleeves 88 on extensions 37 of the offtake pipes are lowered to connect with extensions 39 from the tops of the ascension pipes 16 leading to the gas ma.ins 15. The fuel falls irom the hoppers into the oven chamber forming intermediate pockets 48 and end pockets 49 in which the smoke and gases generated from the fresh fuel accumulate and are removed through the off-take 32 and ascension pipes 16 to the gas mains 15, the valves 40 being opened. Jets 45 withdraw the gases and direct them into the mains 15. On completion of charging the sleeves are raised and covers replaced, valves 40 being closed. In another method of charging, the formation of intermediate pockets 48 is avoided. and the coal in the intermediate hopper is charged last, a central mound only being formed and two gas compartments, each of which is in communication with a gas main through an ascension pipe 16. The intermediate openings 13 and off-take pipes 31 may or may not be employed. This method of charging is described in Specification 302,189.
