Abstract

Charging and dis - charging.-In vertical retorts in which cross flues communicate with an annular heating flue, gases from the latter pass to an annular flue around the hopper to dry the charge. The flue C surrounding the retort A has a number of baffles E, and communicates by the passage L<2> with the annular flue L<1> surrounding the hopper L. A depending sleeve L<5> prevents descending material obstructing the gases escaping from the retort by port P. An oscillating discharger G is arranged at the lower end of the retort, the discharged coke passing to a hopper H having alternately-operated in - let and outlet valves J, K.
