Coking processes.-A mixture of coal gas and water gas is obtained by passing steam through coal in an externally heated chamber and then passing the steam and distillates through coke either in the same chamber or in another externallv heated chamber. A retort a<1> is charged with coal and a retort a<2> with coke, heating flues f being supplied with gas from a producer d and steam being fed into the bottom of retort a<1> by a pipe i. The steam and distillates pass by a conduit n to the bottom of retort a<2> when the tarry matter and dust are removed and the mixed gases are taken off through mains g. In a modification one retort only is used and the coke superposed on the coal charge.
