Abstract

467,329. Steaming gas retorts. SCHROTH, W. Feb. 18, 1937, No. 4901. [Class 55 (i)] In a continuously operating retort for the production of coal gas, the water gas generated by steaming the charge in the lower part of the retort is withdrawn by a byepass duct 8 directly to an externally heated free space above the charge, in which space the water gas mixes with the distillates and is withdrawn through an outlet 5. By this means, tar forming hydrocarbons are cracked into gases or vapours in the hot charge in which the scavenging effect of the water gas and steam mixture is avoided. Steam is admitted through pipe 7, superheated in zone 3 and partly converted into water gas in zone 2.
