Abstract
229,042. Neath, J., and Chaney, W. Dec. 14, 1923. Producers. - In the manufacture of coal gas and water gas, coal is carbonized in horizontal retorts and the coke gasified in twin producers, the water gas from one producer being mixed with the coal gas from the retorts and producer gas from the other producer, together with some coal gas, being used to heat first the retorts and then the producer generating water gas. The water gas from one producer A enters a chamber J into which the retorts B open, from which chamber the water gas passes either to ascension pipes leading to the hydraulic main or through the retorts to be mixed with the coal gas. Producer gas from the other producer A<1> together with some low grade coal gas passes through ports N<1> to be burned in a combustion chamber surrounding the retorts, the hot gases passing down to the bottom of the setting and round the producer A and thence to a recuperator and chimney. A portion of the producer gas and low grade coal gas may be passed to the hydraulic main. The producers A and A<1> are used alternately to generate water- and producer-gas.
