Producers; coking processes.-Bituminous coal is gasified by establishing two hot zones in a fuel bed, generating combustible gas in one zone, superheating the gas by passing it through the other zone, and passing the superheated gas through the coal in a carbonizing chamber which may be superposed on the hot fuel bed. Coal is fed into a carbonizing chamber 2 and the resulting coke fills a gasifying chamber 3 in which two hot zones b, d are maintained, the lower one by air admitted below the grate and the upper one either by air passed downwardly from ports 7 or by air supplied through secondary inlets 32 for burning the producer gas. During the run, steam is admitted below the grate and the water gas generated in the lower zone d is superheated in the upper zone b and passed through the fresh charge in the, chamber 2, the mixed water gas and coal gas being led either by a pipe 17 to a holder or by a branch pipe 31 to a main 12 leading to a carburettor which is preheated by the gases generated during the blow. Prior to the steaming, and if the fresh charge is wet or not easily carbonized, the hot gases in the generator 3 are circulated through the chamber 2 and pipe 17 and back by pipe 23 to the generator. The gases generated in the chamber 2 during the blow may be bypassed to the main gas outlet. A mixture of water gas, coal gas and producer gas may be obtained by passing the gases during the blow through the chamber 2, steam being added to the air blast, or producer gas and water gas may be alternately passed through the chamber 2.
