Abstract

279,059. Humphreys & Glasgow, Ltd., (Assignees of Chrisman, C. S.). Oct. 13, 1926, [Convention date]. Producers.-Combustible gas comprising a mixture of distillation gas and carburetted water gas is obtained by blasting the lower part of a fuel bed, making an up-run through the fuel bed. carburetting and fixing other gas by heat stored during the blasting and passing the carburetted gas and the water gas from the up-run through the upper part of the fuel bed to generate coal gas which is mixed with the other combustible gases. Two generators 1, 2 are blasted in parallel, the blast gases traversing the gasification zones 11 only, and passing through superheaters 3, 4 and regenerators and carburettors 5, 6, to which air is supplied to support combustion, before leaving by stack valves 29. A down-run is then made on one generator, say 1, and an uprun on generator 2, and, by suitable adjustment of the valves, the water gas from the generator 1 passes through conduit 17 to the regenerator chamber 25 and carburetting chamber 24 of the carburettor 6 from which the gas and oil vapours pass to and are fixed in superheater 4 before entering by conduit 14 the generator 2 where they mix with the up-run water gas and distil the fuel in the upper part of the generator; the mixed gases pass through conduit 20 to condensing apparatus and storage. 'The steam runs are now reversed and an up-run made in generator 1 while a down-run is made in generator 2, the gases taking a path similar to that described but through the alternative fixers and carburettors. In a modified process, after the parallel blast and during a down-run on generator 1, steam is admitted by pipe 32 to vessel 5 and passes through heater 3 to generator 1 and is used in the gas making, in this case it is necessary to make the next step a parallel blasting before the alternative operation is commenced. Supplementary gas from storage may be admitted through pipe 31. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 4, the generator 2 is blasted upwards and and gas passes directly into superheater 4 and is burned therein, the hot gases passing through the carburettor 5a to the stack 18. During the run, steam is admitted to the base of the generator, the water gas going through the carbonization zone 3a, gas being simultaneously drawn from storage through pipe 20, carburetted in chamber 5a, fixed in superheater 4a and passed together with the water gas through the carbonization zone to the wash box 8 and storage. A down-run is then made, the water gas passing by conduit 13 to the wash box and storage. Steam or water may be admitted by pipe 28.
