Producers.-In generating water gas from bituminous fuel, the down-run gas only is carburetted and is mixed with up-run gas from which the by-products have been recovered. During the '' blow," the gas flows through an outlet 4 to the top of a combined carburetter and superheater 15 wherein it is burned, and the products escape through a boiler 25 to the stack 26. During the up-run, steam is supplied through an inlet 12 and the grate 30, and superheated steam is supplied through the pipe 13, and the gas is withdrawn from the top of the preliminary distillation chamber 3 through a wash-box 27. During the down-run, steam is supplied through the pipe 11, and the gas is withdrawn through the air blast pipe 6 and pasted through the carburettor to the washbox. The set preferably includes a second producer, and the running is so timed that at the change over from the up-run to the down-run in one producer the up-run in the other producer is started.
