Coking processes; producers.-Coal is charged into a vertical retort superposed on a producer in which the residue from the retort is utilized for making water gas. The retort is heated more strongly at the top than at the bottom by passing the gases from the " blow " through a pipe e tc flue r, secondary air being admitted by flue p, and during the " run " a part of the water gas is passed up the pipe e and burnt in the flues d round the retort, the lower end of the flues d communicating with the waste gas flue g, the rest of the water gas entering the retort and heating it in. ternally. The " blow " gases may be used entirely for generating steam, in which case the retort is externally heated either by a mixture of the water and distillation gases taken from the retort outlet and burnt in the flues d, or by burning a part of the water gas only in the flues d.
