Abstract

Coking processes; producers.-Bituminous coal is distilled by being heated in granular or finely divided form in a heat accumulator which is periodically heated to about 900‹ C. The residual coke may be gasified, and the producer or water gas passed through the heat accumulator which is heated thereby. The coal is fed from a conveyer 1 into a shaft having a Cowper heat accumulator 2, and during its passage therethrough it is distilled and the distillates withdrawn through a pipe leading to a cyclone separator 3. The coke falls into the lower part 4 of the shaft, and any coke carried into the cyclone separator is delivered into the shaft through a conduit 10. This hot coke is steamblasted through pipes 5 until its temperature falls, when it is hot blasted with air from pipes 6, after which fresh coal is supplied to the apparatus. The water gas or producer gas are withdrawn from an outlet 7 at the top of the shaft, and ashes are discharged at an outlet 9. The hot gases leaving the upper part of the shaft may be used for pre-heating the coal.
