Coking processes. - In the low temperature carbonization of bituminous carbonaceous materials, hot gases or vapours which may be inert or may contain oxygen, are blown through the materials in such a manner as to keep the fuel in active movement on its bed but to avoid combustion or gasification to a higher extent than is necessary to produce the heat for carbonization, a temperature of 400‹ to 600‹ C. being employed. The fuel thus carbonized may be gasified also while in a state of agitation. Fuel from a hopper A is passed through a dryer B and cyclone separator C to a carbonizing chamber D, the hot gases being admitted through a grate R. The hot gases are circulated through a dust separator O, heat exchanger F and condenser G and back to the chamber D, a burner K being used to re-heat the gases. The hot coke overflows through a pipe which transfers it to a worm conveyer leading to a producer E. In Fig. 2, heated air is introduced through the grate G, fuel is charged from an inlet B and coke removed through an outlet F, fine coal collected in a separator D being returned bv a worm E to the fuel bed.
