Abstract

279,060. Humphreys & Glasgow, Ltd., (Assignees of Chrisman, C. S.). Oct. 13, 1926, [Convention date]. Producers.-A mixture of distillation- and water-gas is obtained from fuels of volatile content by the use of two gas producers 1, 3, the lower part of each producer being blasted with air and the heat of the blast gases being stored in stoves 4, 2, and by up-steaming one producer, say 1, to liberate coal gas and down-steaming the lower part of the other producer 3 to give water gas which is heated in a stove 2 and passed through the upper part of the up-steamed producer from which the mixed gases are led off. During the " blow " air is admitted through pipes 7 to the gasified zones of both producers and the gases pass from producers 1 and 3 by pipes 9, 10 through stoves 2, 4 and pipes 21, 22 to a heater 5 and stack 28. Air for combustion in stoves 2, 4 is preheated in the air heater 5 and passes by pipes 25, 26 to the top of the stoves, the various valves being suitably adjusted. During the " run " the air supply is cut off, steam is admitted to the top of the gasification zone of producer 1 and the water gas passes through pipe 11 to the base of stove 4 in which it is heated before passing through pipe 10 to the producer 3, and up through the carbonization zone together with the water gas simultaneously made by up-steaming. The resultant mixed water gas and coal gas pass by pipe 16 to a wash box 6 and to storage. The steaming may now be reversed so that an up-run is made in the producer 1 and a down-run in producer 3, the mixed gases being obtained in a similar manner, on operation of the valves necessary. The supply of down-run water gas may be supplemented by gas from storage. In a modified process air blasting may take place between each change over of steaming. Steam may be generated in the stoves by spraying in water through pipes 37.
