Abstract

578,332. Water gas generation. STEINSCHLAEGER, M. July 9, 1942, No. 9571. Addition to 577,015. [Class 55 (i)] In the intermittent production of carburetted water gas, heat is supplied to the generator partly by using a regenerator heated by the blow gases or by gases from another source, and partly by blowing with air, a mixture of water gas and steam and/or carbon dioxide being then passed through the regenerator to the water gas generator and oil introduced into the gases produced in the geneiator so that the oil is cracked by sensible heat of the gases produced and of the undecomposed steam and/or carbon dioxide. In a modification, synthesis gases (H and CO) are obtained by passing through the regenerator hydrocarbons and steam and/or carbon dioxide before their supply to the generator which is blown from time to time, the sensible heat of the gases produced being stored in the ash bed and used for superheating the steam or gases used in subsequent gas making and blowing periods, sufficient steam and/or carbon dioxide being supplied to the regenerator to effect reaction with the hydrocarbons in the regenerator and provide an excess for the water gas reaction in the generator. The generator 1, Fig. 2, is blown upwards by air, and the hot gases generated passed through the superheater 2 and regenerator 3. During the run, re-cycle gases are supplied by line 7 and steam through line 8 to the regenerator 3 and injected into the generator 1, a part of the gases leaving the generator being re-cycled as above, and a part passing by line 11 to where oil is injected at 12 and the mixture passed through the superheater 2 by line 13, the oil being cracked to yield carburetted water gas. Coke oven gas or other methane containing gases such as residual gases from oil synthesis processes (together with steam or carbon dioxide) may be used to replace the re-cycled gases. When making synthesis gases, after the blow in which the regenerator 15, Fig. 4, is heated, steam and/or carbon dioxide is admitted by line 20 and hydrocarbon gases by line 21, the resulting products containing CO and H passing by line 17 through the generator 14 when further H and CO are produced by the steam and/or carbon dioxide remaining, the final gases being taken off by lines 22, 23.
