In a process of producing combustible gases methanol is vaporized in a boiler 1 and the vapour is converted by thermal decomposition into carbon monoxide and hydrogen by passing it via pipe 4 through a bed of solid carbonaceous fuel in a conventional water gas generator 7 at a temperature of at least 700‹ C., the supply of methanol vapour being intermittently interrupted to allow reheating of the fuel bed by blasting with air. Steam may be added to the methanol vapour and the combustible gases produced may be enriched by the thermal decomposition of a hydrocarbon oil in the presence of the gases. The methanol employed in the process may have been obtained by catalytic synthesis from a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen produced by the gasification of solid carbonaceous fuel.
