495,063. Water-gas generation. VOLK, F. May 7, 1937, No. 13139. [Class 55 (i)] In a process for producing water gas, or gases containing water gas, and in which two or more generators are employed, the zone passed by the water gas immediately before discharge from the second generator in the series is the hottest zone in the gas generating period. Each generator may be provided with a heat regenerator. The object is to convert any tar or hydrocarbons into carbon monoxide and hydrogen, any carbon dioxide being reduced to carbon monoxide. When generator 1 is being air blasted by fan 3 and pipe 12, the hot blast gases are burned in regenerator 2 and discharged through conduit 7, and during this period, water gas is made in generator 1<1> by admitting steam from above through pipe 8<1> and regenerator 2<1>, the water gas being withdrawn from below through pipe 91. When generator 1 is heated, steam is supplied to generator 1<1> from below through pipe 11<1> and the water gas and distillates pass through regenerators 2<1> and 2 and down through generator 1, the tarry vapours being decomposed and the gases escaping through pipe 9. When the fuel in generator 1 is sufficiently cooled the steam from pipe 11<1> is cut off, conduit 10 is closed, and steam admitted through pipe 8 to regenerator 2 and down through generator 1, a hot blast period being started in generator 1<1>. Water gas generated by admitting steam below generator 1 then passes through regenerators 2, 2<1> and down through generator 1<1>. In a modification three generators with their respective regenerators may be employed in a cyclic manner.
