Abstract

296,161. Patent Retorts, Ltd., and Davidson, T. M. July 2, 1927. Producers.-In complete gasification apparatus of the kind in which a retort c is disposed above a water-gas generator a and heated externally by the gases generated, the generator and the chequered brickwork d of the jacket surrounding the retort are provided with one or more division walls b, f, the charge leaving the retort being divided on entering the generator. During the " blow" air is admitted below the grates g through passages i and openings i, the gases passing through nostrils a and being burned in the chequer brickwork d with air from an inlet n. During the "make" steam enters below one of the grates and at each side in turn, and the water gas passes from one side of the generator across the fuel in the lower part of the retort, through the nostrils on the opposite side of the retort and up through the chequered brickwork chamber on that side only, the operation is then reversed and the "make" gases passed up the other side of the brickwork chamber d, being withdrawn through each gas outlet o in turn. The hot gases from the apparatus pass by a fitting h<1> to a heat exchanger h for preheating the air. This comprises tubes h' through which the hot gases pass to an outlet h<5>, the air entering by an inlet h<6> and passing by a valved conduit l to the blast fitting i and by a valved conduit n to the chequered chamber d. The apparatus may be periodically worked with a down-run, the gases being withdrawn through an outlet p.
