Abstract

261,975. Marshall, F. D. June 5, 1925. Coking processes; plant.-Carbonaceous materials are fed by a plurality of co-acting screws through a casing or retort heated by blow gases from a water-gas producer, the water-gas being either passed through or around the retort to supplement the heating by the blow gases, or withdrawn separately and subsequently mixed with the retort gases. In a distilling and briquetting apparatus of the knid described in Specification 261,927 the material is forced by screws A' through cells formed by internal webs in the retort A which has gas withdrawal ducts A<2> leading to an outlet pipe S. During the " blow " the gases from the producer D pass through a dust extractor E to the retort combustion chamber B where they are burnt with air preheated by passage through the pipe K in the dust extractor. During the " run " the water gas passes either through or around the retort A to supplement the heat from the blow gases or through an outlet N to a heat interchanger F from which low pressure steam is obtained or hot water for use in a steam boiler and the gas is led by a pipe O to mix with the coal gas. The temperature of the retort does not exceed 1400‹ F. Fig. 6 shows a low temperature retort P superposed on a high temperature retort O which is surrounded by a combustion chamber O<1> heated by the method above described the combustion gases passing into a heating chamber P<1> are being admitted by ports P<2> to cool the hot gases. The screws P<3> are operated in the manner described in Specifications 261,919 and 261,927. Part of the blow gases may be used to heat a separate chamber in which the water gas is heated before reaching the retort.
