Abstract
484,050. Low-temperature carbonization. ROWLEY, H. E. G. (Soc. Chimique de la Grande Paroisse-Azote & Produits Chimiques) July 12, 1937, No. 19300. [Class 55 (i)] In the low-temperature distillation of carbonaceous materials, particularly oil-shale, in which the material is distilled by a horizontal gaseous stream, the distillation residues still in the hot state are subjected to an oxygencontaining gaseous stream so as to partly or wholly burn the carbon constituent thereof, the combustion products being utilized for the indirect heating of the gases serving for the distillation. A vertical retort comprising superimposed chambers A ... D for preheating, distilling, combustion and cooling respectively is provided with a heat exchanger E one side of which forms a closed circuit with the distilling chamber by means of pipes 3, 4 and 6 and the other side forms a similar circuit with the combustion chamber by means of pipes 10 and 8. The distillation gases are therefore supplied with heat in the interchanger by means of the combustion gases, air being supplied at 7 for the production of the latter. Part of the distillation gases are continuously removed through a pipe 5 and oils, tar &c. recovered therefrom. The chambers Band C may bo of prism or cylinder shape and are provided on opposite sides with inlet and outlet apertures composed of slots separated by inclined louvres. Part of the combustion gases are byepassed through the preheating chamber A by pipe 1, the fuel therein being pre-heated to 200-225‹ C. The various chambers of the retort are preferably connected together by passages of reduced cross-section.
