Abstract

270,780. Collin & Co., Collin, F. J., and Schõfer, J. Jan. 14, 1926. Cooling discharged materials. - Coke discharged from retorts c is cooled by the circulation of inert flue gases through the cooling chambers k and a waste-heat boiler w, heated air, or gas containing sufficient oxygen for the combustion of the combustible matter taken up in the chambers k, being added to the circulating gases prior to their passage through the boiler. As shown in Fig. 1, retort flue gases are circulated through the pipe a, chambers k, and conduit b bv a steam or water jet s and hot air, from the air-heaters of the retorts, is supplied to a combustion chamber v fitted with a fine-mesh screen, the excess gas being discharged from the circuit to the stack f. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the coke-cooling chamber is formed in two parts k<1>, k<2> and flue gases are continuously circulated by a steam or water jet s through the part k<1> and a boiler w. To the compartment k<2> low-value gas, e.g. generator or blast-furnace gas, is supplied by a pipe h and after being preheated by the hot coke passes to a regenerator g<1> and thence to the heating flues of the retorts, where it is burnt with hot air from the regenerator l<1>. The products of combustion are passed through the air and gas regenerators l<2>, g<2> which are thereby heated ready for reversal and escape in the former case to the stack f, while the gases from the latter, still. hot owing to the preheating of the gas in the chamber k<2> and containing a certain amount of oxygen, are delivered to the gases passing from the chamber k<1> to the boiler w. Before the cooling operation is begun, steam from a pipe d may be passed into the coke chambers and the resulting water-gas taken off through a pipe e, Fig. 1.
