Abstract

305,253. Duffield, F. L. Nov. 1, 1927. Producers. - Pulverized fuel is preheated in air to 200-250‹ C. to prevent the particles from sticking together on further heating, is then distilled in the presence of a combustible gas and is gasified by partial combustion in air and steam, volatiles from the distillation zone being recovered by condensation and the hot gases passed through heat eschangers for preheating the air, gas and steam employed. The fuel is fed from a vessel 10 to a preheating chamber 12 through which it passes on a spiral V- shaped trough 13 perforated at the bottom, and leading to a similar trough 16 in a distillation chamber 15 from which the distillates are discharged through a pipe 31. The coked fuel is delivered partly to a primary combustion chamber 17 through an aperture 20 with air through a surrounding passage 21a and additional air through lower aperture 21 and partly to a secondary or gasification chamber 18, the fuel supply to this chamber being in excess of that actually gasified. This fuel is gasified in the chamber 9 and the hot gases are used to raise steam in a steam generator 22 and to heat gas, air for combustion and air for the fuel pre-treatment in heat exchangers 23, 24 and 25 before passing to a purifier 33. The ungasified residue collects in a sump 40 and is returned for use in chamber 9. Clean gas is passed from the outlet 26 by a pipe 27 and pump 28 to the heater 23 and by pipe 30 to the distillation chamber 15. Air is driven by a pump 4 through the heater 25 to the pre-treating chamber 12 and by a pump 3 through the heater 24 to the openings 21, 21a in the burner chamber 17. A burner of this nature may be used for heating boilers or other furnaces as described in Specification 305,270, [Class 51 (i), Furnaces and kilns, Combustion apparatus of].
