Producers.-Water gas is generated by heating finely-divided carbonaceous matter such as coke or coal in the presence oi oxygen and hydrogen obtained by decomposing water vapour. The carbonaceous matter from a hopper a<2> impinges on a deflector a<3> and falls on to the bars a, air is forced through an inlet a<1> heating the charge to incandescence, and the hot gases pass through a superheater D and preheater E, the cover e<2> being raised. During the run, the cover e<2> is closed, steam is passed by pipe e through the preheater E and decomposed in the superheater D into oxygen and hydrogen which enter the generator C and meet the finely-divided fuel which is passing down the generator, the resulting water gas being withdrawn through an outlet a<4>.
