Generators or producers; retorts and methods of working.-A gas plant comprises a generator and a vertical retort the outlet of which is above the generator and in proximity thereto, and means for passing gases from the generator into the retort. The generator may have fuel and superheater chambers, and the retort may be of form. The plant described comprises two retorts C and two generators A, each having two superheater chambers B, the hearths of the generators communicating through an arch D. Coal is fed to the retorts from hoppers K, and the coke may be discharged into the generators. In a process described, the generators are blown in parallel, the " blow " gas passing through the superheater and thence to a boiler to generate steam. Steam is then admitted into one superheater at the top, and passes down through one generator, through the arch D, and up through the other generator. The water gas passes through the second pair of superheaters and is then led through the retort to gasify the charge by internal heating. The retort may also be externally heated by " blow " gas, or combustion of water gas &c., or by high-pressure steam, and " blow " gas or producer gas may be led into the retort. The apparatus may be used for making coal gas, water gas, and producer gas separately or in any desired mixtures. Specifications 14291/89, 4572/13, 6613/15, and 111,495 are referred to.
