Abstract
570,007. Gas-producers. DUFFIELD, F. L. Sept. 20, 1943, No. 15412. [Class 55 (i)] In a process for the production of water gas having a high hydrogen content and a low carbon monoxide content, the heat required by the endothermic reaction is supplied by steam having a constant superheat during the gasmaking run. The Figure shows one embodiment of the invention in which the air passes from the main a to a flue b, through a regenerator d, through portholes f, to the coke mass in sufficient quantity to produce CO only which is burned in a space h by the admission of cold air through a valve j and the heat of combustion raises the temperature of a superheater k. During the gas-making run, dry, low-pressure steam from a main m is passed into a flue l through the superheater k to the space h where the temperature is maintained constant by controlling the admission of low-pressure steam from the main m through the pipe o and valve p. The steam, at a temperature of 1160‹ C., after passing through the portholes g, reacts with the coke and the products of the reaction leave the retort through the portholes f. Most of the sensible heat in the gas is given up to the regenerator d, the cool gas passing through the flue b to the main a. A small proportion of steam is passed vertically through the retort from a chamber n to cool the grate and ash. The gas in the main a is mainly hydrogen and CO2 from which the latter may be removed. The length of air blow and gas-making runs are stated to be the same.
