Abstract
<PICT:0670863/III/1> <PICT:0670863/III/2> A carbon black production process comprises heating a confined stream of gaseous hydrocarbon, substantially free from hydrocarbons containing more than 2 to 3 carbon atoms per molecule, to a temperature and for a period of time such as to effect partial pyrolysis to an extent just short of the point where any substantial amount of carbon is liberated, injecting the partially pyrolyzed gas immediately thereafter into a turbulent stream of furnace gases at a temperature in excess of that at which the hydrocarbon gas is decomposed to form carbon black, cooling the gaseous suspension of black and separating the black. Fuel gas under pressure is injected through manifold 24 and headers 23 to nozzles 21, Fig. 3, while air under pressure passes through perforated plate 31 to windbox 19. The resulting combustible mixture burns in ports 16 in refractory burner block 15 and the blast flame gases pass from the burner assembly 2, Fig. 2, into refractory lined chamber 1. Natural gas containing at least 95 per cent methane is injected, with or without steam, through manifold 26 and headers 25 to refractory tubes 17 which terminate at least 18 inches from the face of the burner block. The gaseous suspension of carbon black passes through blending chamber 3, and passage 4, having water sprays 11, to precooler 5. The position of tubes 15 and nozzles 21 may be adjusted by sliding manifolds 26, 24 respectively in and out. Tubes 17 may contain a known reforming catalyst.
