Abstract

716,710. Oil gas; cracking gaseous mixtures. KOPPERS GES., H. March 12, 1951 [March 15, 1950; Aug. 31, 1950; Feb. 27, 1951], No. 5907/51. Class 55 (2) In a process for the production of gas having a high content of carbon monoxide and hydrogen which may be used as town's gas or for synthesis purposes, liquid fue's such as mineral oils or tar or gaseous hydrocarbons are reacted or reformed with preheated steam and oxygen in a regenerator system operating with alternating direction of flow. The apparatus consists of two preheating regenerators 1 and 2 connected by ducts 16 to a reaction heat regenerator 3. Combustion chambers 4 and 5, into which heating fuel may be atomized through nozzles 6 and 7, are provided at the tops of regenerators 1 and 2 respectively. Regenerator 3 is divided by a mid-partition 17 into two vertical compartments into which gasmaking oil may be atomized from nozzles 8 and 9. In operation, steam and oxygen are admitted at 12 into regenerator 1, which has been heated during a previous cycle, and flow into regenerator 3. into which oil is injected through nozzle 9. The oil vaporizes and passes with the steam and oxygen through the regenerator wherein it is cracked and reacts with the steam and oxygen to form permanent gases. The gases pass through regenerator 2 which abstracts part of their heat and discharge to storage at 15. When regenerator 1 has cooled to below gas-making temperature, the " run " is stopped and a heating period commenced, air being admitted to regenerator 1 at 13 and liquid fuel at 6, the resulting combustion gases heating regenerators 3 and 2 and discharging at 14. The " run now takes place in the opposite direction, steam and oxygen being admitted to regenerator 2 at 12 and oil at 8, the cycle being completed by a heating period with gas flow in the same direction.
