Abstract

<PICT:0654081/III/1> Carbon black is manufactured by mixing a hot gas with a solid, liquid, or gaseous carbon-aceous material, e.g. tar oil, hydrocarbons or oxygen or nitrogen derivatives thereof, animal or vegetable oils, fats and waxes, or natural resins, at a temperature insufficient to crack the carbonaceous material, passing the mixture thus formed into a zone in which it is heated by mixing with a second hot gas so that the average temperature is between 800-1400 DEG C. and cooling the second mixture in a time of less than five seconds to a temperature at which reaction of the carbon black formed with carbon dioxide and steam does not take place. In Fig. 1 recycle gas, a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen, is fed from gas holder 26 by conduit 30 through heated regenerator 1 containing checker bricks 3 to reaction chamber 4 wherein air is admitted at 11 to increase gas temperature to, say, 1700 DEG C. Hydrocarbon oil from nozzle 55, Fig. 3, is carried by hot gas from burner 48 through refractory lined tube 51 into the hot gases in reaction chamber 4 at 7 and the contact time is restricted by cooling to, say, 1000 DEG C. by gas entering at 10. The resulting gas mixture is passed through carbon black precipitator 23 and thence to gas holder 26 whence part is recycled through conduit 30, part is used as cooling gas through conduit 10, part, supplemented with oil at 22, reheats regenerator 2 by combustion with air admitted at 18, and part may be used as a fuel for other purposes; the air passes through reaction chamber 14 to remove any carbon deposited in the previous cracking. Regenerators 1, 2 are then reversed in action and chamber 14 used for cracking. In starting up, the apparatus may be heated by hydrogen or steam supplied at 5. Alternative apparatus is also described where a regenerator is not employed, all the necessary heat being produced by burning recycle gas.
