Abstract

Retort furnaces. -To prevent intense local heating and to distribute the heat in chambers containing retorts heated by liquid or gaseous fuel, the burning mixture of air and producer gas &c. is agitated or circulated by means of fluid jets 12 of steam, air, or combustion p r oducts, which are injected into the retort chamber at various heights across the line of travel of the combustion products so as to mix the fluid combustible and air with the hot products of combustion. Fig. 2 shows a gas-retort bench heated by a producer 1 with the invention applied thereto. Producer gas passes through the passage 3, where it is mixed with air admitted through passages 8 and heated in flues 5 by combustion products passing through the flues 4. The agitating-jets may be inclined as shown at 12<a>.
