Abstract
369,930. Gaseous-fuel furnaces. THEUNISSEN, H., 435, Chaussee de Charleroi, Mont - sur - Marchienne, and HELIN, H., 30, Avenue Victor Emmanuel III, Ucole, Brussels, both in Belgium. Dec. 22, 1930, No. 38554. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1929. [Class 51 (i).] In furnaces heated by gases rich in hydrocarbons decomposable by heat in which the gases follow a path of substantial length in highly heated flues or passages within the masonry of the furnace and are liable to crack therein, a material such as steam, water, or carbon dioxide is introduced into the flues or passages at a point where cracking occurs and before the point of ignition or into the gas before it is admitted to the furnace to react with the carbon to form combustible matter. The steam or water used may be heated in regenerators with the gases. The pressure of the water or steam introduced into the gas may be used for increasing the pressure of the mixture and such pressure water or steam may be introduced so as to ensure an intimate mixture, for example by arranging the steam jets tangentially. The gas employed may be coke oven gas from which hydrogen has been removed or gas produced by cracking heavy oils. The water may be introduced in a pulverized condition and the quantity of material employed to mix with the gas may be adjusted to obtain the desired degree of reaction.
