Abstract

643,398. Clay compositions. LONDON BRICK CO., Ltd., and BANNISTER, H. Jan. 12, 1948. No. 881. [Class 70] Bricks, tiles and slabs and other clay products are made by drying the " green " products, carbonizing the dried products in a closed chamber to gasify the organic content of the clay and utilizing the gaseous and liquid products of carbonization to effect drying, carbonization and firing of further quantities of " green " products. In a preferred process, moulded " green " bricks are dried at 150‹ C. in chamber a by means of hot air passing from heat-exchanger c through pipes b. The dried bricks pass to chamber e where they are carbonized at 1000‹ C., volatile gases leaving through tar separator k, scrubber n to gas holder g. The bricks then pass to chamber j where they are burnt by gas from the holder by means of burners i which also heat the carbonizing chamber e. Flue gases are withdrawn via heat-exchanger c by fan t. A gas generator m which employs coke as the fuel provides gas to start the reaction.
