Jan. 29, 1932, No. 21517/33. Divided on 398,160. [Class 51 (ii).] In a retort furnace for the low-temperature carbonization of coal, which has been mixed with crude oil or coal tar, the lower retorts 58 of the series are gas-heated and the products of combustion, after heating the upper retorts 5, are withdrawn through dampered end downtakes 48, a portion being recirculated around the upper retorts by a fan 45 and ducts 51. The charge is fed to the retorts in measured quantities preferably by the apparatus described in Specification 398,160. Instead of the arrangement shown five retorts may be set stepwise at three different levels. Combustion is effected in bed of broken fire brick and the waste gases may be used for preheating the gas and air for combustion.
