286,104. Ridge, H. M. Aug. 23, 1926. Destructive distillation, furnaces for. - A superposed hearth oven for carbonizing fuel has four distilling-hearths B<1>-B<4> heated by flues G, and two cooling-hearths B<5>, B<6>, over which the charge is moved by rotary rabbles C, D. The gaseous distillates are drawn off separately from the different hearths, and after volatile hydrocarbons have been extracted the gas is returned for combustion in the flues G with air from a recuperator H. T'o facilitate control the recuperator is divided into two equal parts, and the flues G are correspondingly grouped. Air from cooling-flues G<0> associated with the hearths B<5>, B<6> may be passed to the recuperator.
