July 18, 1930, No. 21822. Convention date, July 20, 1929. [Class 51 (ii).] In apparatus for charging coke ovens of the kind comprising travelling hoppers d having downwardly extending pipes e which are brought into register with charging-holes c in the oven root, each pipe e is surrounded by a sleeve h adapted, during charging, to be lowered on to the oven roof to provide an annular space through which the gases escaping from the oven may be withdrawn without passing through the pipe e. The sleeve h is movable up and down on a fixed sleeve f between which and the fuel pipe e is a space closed at the upper end and connected by a flue g with a gas-collecting main i.
