370,282. Coke ovens. OTTO & CO. GES. DR. C., 9, Christstrasse, Bochum, Germany. July 14, 1931, No. 20226. Convention date, July 14, 1930. [Class 55 (i).] Distillates are withdrawn from the centre of the charge in coke ovens for between the first two-thirds to three-quarters of the carbonizing period, after which steam is introduced into the charge through the gas withdrawal means. The steam cools the gas outlet tubes and generates water gas which increases the yield of gas in the second period. At the beginning of the carbonizing period steam, which may be mixed with water gas and coal gas, is introduced into the upper gas collecting space, and acts as a scavenging gas, these gases being introduced through the hydraulic main leading from the upper gas space. A vacuum up to 200 m.m. may be used in the central gas withdrawal tubes and varied automatically, to ensure that the pressure in the gas space is never higher than that in the heating flues. Cooling bodies may be inserted into the suction tubes. The distillates are withdrawn through ducts c, which are formed in the charge by introducing boring rods h movable in sleeves h<1> by grippers x fastened to chains x<1> the whole being mounted on a wagon w. Tubes k are inserted for drawing off the distillates through opening n leading by a pipe p and valve q to a hydraulic main v. Steam is supplied from a main t on closure of valve q, which normally is controlled automatically by means dependent upon the pressure difference between the gas space u and an adjacent heating flue. The gas spaces u of each oven are connected by a conduit s which serves also for introduction of steam during the last part of the carbonizing period, or of steam and coal gas at the beginning of the carbonizing period. The distillates in the last part of the carbonizing period pass through the conduit s and the chambers which are at the beginning of the period into the main v. Cooling elements m are placed in the tubes k and are cooled by water which is supplied drop by drop.
