Abstract

277,819. Bretherick, D., and Glossop, G. J. Jan. 5, 1927. Retort furnaces; cooling discharged materials; flues.-In an apparatus for the low temperature distillation of coal &c., each retort comprises a nest of vertical tubes with which are associated horizontal and vertical ribs arranged to cause the heating-gases to reverse in successive horizontal flues. As shown, the tubes 1 of each retort are arranged in two rows with a vertical rib 26 between them. Combustion is effected in a chamber 24 at the lower end, and the connecting- ports between the flues formed by the horizontal ribs 2 are so disposed that, in each plane, the gases pass in series over both rows of tubes, and in adjacent planes the direction of flow is reversed. The ribs are formed integrally with the tubes. The retorts are mounted in a framework 4 and at the lower end of each is a rotary or sliding door 5, by which the carbonized fuel can be passed to a cooling-chamber 7 having an inclined floor and a water-sealed outlet door 8. Fuel discharged from the cooling-chamber passes over an inclined screen 9. which separates the breeze from the larger portion of the charge. The gaseous distillation products are drawn to the hydraulic main 15 through a water-jacketed pipe 12 having a valve 13 by which the retort can be sealed during the charging operation. Tar &c. can be removed from the main through a water-sealed opening 17. The heating-chambers of the various retorts are connected to the chimny flue 18 through vertical flues 19, Fig. 6, of varying lengths, so that the chimney draught in the different chambers is equalized. The combustion chambers 24 are fired by producer, mixed, or rich gases, and may be filled with refractory chequer work.
