Abstract
136,880. Davies, W. E. Dec. 19, 1918 Coke ovens etc.; discharging; casings.-Consists mainly of improvements in the heating walls of coke-ovens and the like for carbonizing or distilling solid materials such as coal, shale, peat, wood, lignite, cannel, or refuse, and either intermittent or continuous in action. The heating wall, shown in horizontal section in Fig. 1, comprises alternate combustion flues 1 and waste heat flues 2, behind which is a second set of waste heat flues 3, the arrangement being such that hot gases from the top of each combustion flue 1 are divided between two waste heat flues 2, 3 in proportions determined by a valve (adjustable through a poke-hole) between the top ends of the flues 2, 3 and by the draught in the respective flues. The reverse direction of flow may be adopted with suitable alterations of the supply and exhaust connexions. The flues 1, 2 are of triangular, oval, or heart section, and the flues 3 rectangular and either open or filled with chequer work. A burner 21 is placed at the bottom of each flue 1, Fig. 3. Air from a branch pipe 17 and gas from a branch pipe 18 are mixed by a revolving mixer 19, and the mixer passes into the oven main 4<11> and thence to the burner pipe 16, secondary air entering through a hit-and-miss valve 4<1>. A valve 20 prevents backfiring. To direct the heat towards the inner wall of the flue the burner may be perforated only towards that side, and the flue may contain similarly perforated diaphragms 22, either cup-shaped, as shown, or flat. Gases on leaving the flues 3 enter a flue 25, Fig. 4, extending around one half of the oven, and traverse a similar flue 26 beneath it in the opposite direction before reaching the chimney. As shown at the right-hand side of Fig. 4, the heating wall may be built in stages or stories each having its own burners and exhaust flues 25, 26, the vertical flues of successive stages being in staggered relation. To prevent leakage when the oven is worked under vacuum or pressure, metal sheets 25<a>, 1<a>, Fig. 9a, are built in between the stages and between the two parts of the double inner wall. The heating wall is surrounded by an asbestos or like jacket 6 and a water jacket 7. The oven is charged at the top and discharged through a door 32, Fig. 4, carried by arms 35 and operated by a rack 33, which may be actuated by a modified coke oven pusher. For continuous discharge, like adaptations of known discharge means may be utilized in multiple along the length of the retort. Specifications 5464/90, 22274/07, 3197/10, 7049/10, 111,871, and 127,940 are referred to.
