[Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (ii)] In the production of semi - coke, the coke oven is heated in two stages, in the first of which the charge is heated so as rapidly to attain a temperature about 700‹ C., in the material adjacent the walls of the coking chamber of, and in the second the heating is reduced so that no substantial amount of the material exceeds 600‹ C. This is done by heating the oven walls by convection and radiation during the first stage, and by radiation only during the second stage. Each combustion chamber 4 has thick walls 2 separated by lateral chambers 9 from the thin walls 3 of the oven chambers 1. Gas and air are supplied to the combustion chambers 4 through conduits 5 and 7 respectively. When the dampers 14 between the exhaust flues 12 and the collecting flues 13 are opened, the hot gases from chambers 4 pass through one of the conduits 10 and chambers 9 to exhaust, the oven chamber between the heating chambers 9 being heated by connection, as well as by radiation from the walls 2. Each coking chamber 1 is situated between two lateral chambers 9 each of which is fed from a combustion chamber on its side remote from the oven chamber. When all the odd chambers 1 are charged, all the dampers 14 below the oven chambers are closed, and it is only when the odd chambers have been heated considerably that all the even chambers are charged, their dampers being opened. All the dampers of the odd chambers are then closed so that these chambers, which have been heated strongly during the first half of their coking period by convection as well as by radiation, are now heated by radiation only.
