Abstract
499,669. Materials for making coke. VETROCOKE. Aug. 3, 1937, No. 21444. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1936. [Class 55 (ii)] In the production of coke by coking mixtures of coal tar pitch and graphite in externally heated coke-ovens, the graphite is obtained directly from the distillation gases produced, by cracking the heavy hydrocarbons therein in high temperature heating chambers at a temperature between 800 and 1400‹ C. The gases obtained from coking the mixed materials in retorts a flow to a common collector g and from thence to a separating chamber i and a cooling chamber l to offtake m. Cracking takes place in the chamber i by introducing therein through nozzles o, preheated air for combustion with the gases in situ or the burnt gases obtained by the combustion of part of the offtake gases with air. The bulk of the graphite separates in chamber i and some in chamber l. The combustion products from the heating flues c of the ovens may be used for preheating the air supplied to the cracking chamber. The latter is cooled prior to discharging the graphite.
